In this original volume of Armenian Folk Tales, thirty-three wondrous stories and vibrant illustrations transport readers into the deep, magical world of Armenian folklore—a world where the secret of the bird Hazaran Blbul awaits discovery, and where its song may yet breathe life into the withered royal garden. Along the way, we meet the twin brothers Armen and Zarmen as they face the cunning old witch and Dervish Baba; follow the King’s daughter as she searches among seven fortresses for her enchanted beloved; and journey with young Gohar into a distant forest where the werewolf lurks. Will Aleksan reach the palace of the Huri-Peri, from which none have returned? Who is the mysterious swineherd that appears in the kingdom?

Travel with the heroes across faraway and wondrous realms, and share in their trials and triumphs. And when all is said and done, three apples shall fall from the sky: one for the storyteller, one for the listener, and one for the one who heeds the tale.

This collection includes priceless tales gathered during the 19th-21st centuries, presented in literary Armenian, while preserving the charm and expressiveness of the original oral tradition. It features both well-known and forgotten gems from all provinces of Mets Hayk (Greater Armenia).

These are hidden treasures that reflect the thoughts, humor, and wisdom of the Armenian people. Tales that enchant both children and adults—remaining relevant and insightful for today’s readers as well.
